Description
BOTANICAL STUDIES OF TROPICAL FRUITS
Most probably commissioned by British East India Company official William Kerr, these botanical illustrations have been attributed to Win Achun, a rare named artist of that time. They elegantly capture the rich natural heritage of Southeast Asia. Created in the early 19th century, they highlight a fusion of Chinese artistic techniques with European scientific composition. Using fine brushwork and translucent watercolours, the artist meticulously depicted tropical fruits, preserving their beauty for scientific study and artistic admiration. These illustrations serve as a valuable historical record, reflecting the cross-cultural exchange between Asian artists and European patrons. Achun’s legacy has endured throughout his masterful botanical renderings, which continue to captivate art historians, botanists and collectors.
